When talking about golf we think about, “how to drive the ball a long way”, “how to hit the ball straight”, we also think about rotation and many other movements that will get the player the results they seek. Unfortunately, this is not as easy to do as it is to write. Fitness is not written about as much as it should. There are golfers who are very successful at all levels of the game, but are not the fittest people around. On the other hand you have golfers who are extremely fit and strong who are very powerful on the course. Does this mean that they would be the best players in the world?
My answer to the above is no. There are examples of both types of players that you can compare. If you look at someone like John Daly you would think that he does not fit the profile of a successful golf body type. The part that amazes people is that he is a two time major winner, an accomplishment that the majority of golfers will never achieve. Then you look at a fit and strong specimen like Tiger Woods, who is chasing the most major tournaments won. Who is better and why?
Clearly, Tiger Woods is the superior player because his body can sustain a consistent swing over a longer period of time. John Daly has amazing skills, but over a long period of time, his body will not keep up with someone like Tiger Woods. Everybody has their own natural DNA in their golf swing, but you would not teach someone to swing like John Daly. He is unique in his own way. When you look at Tiger Woods, you can use his swing as a model when teaching golfers, but the challenge there is that you need to have the fitness, strength and flexibility to achieve his body mechanics.
When having a lesson, it is important for the professional to look at what range of flexibility and strength a player has before he chooses what method to use to help the player improve. There might be a point where the player may need to become more flexible to achieve certain movements. This is where golfers should find a trainer who can help them improve their range of movements. I believe that if your body is not fit enough to make certain movements, your body will make compensating moves, which you may not be aware of. These moves are normally a negative feature for your game.
I have a large range of exercises to help players of all levels. If you do not like to exercise and go to the gym, at least make the effort to do a couple of basic stretches and warm your body temperature before you play your game of golf. This will help you score well on your first few holes, where you normally score poorly. It is important to warm up before a round of golf. You will be amazed at the results that you will achieve!
