The “Long Game” is a fun part of playing golf. There are many reasons to why we do not hit the ball the length that we would like. There are many stories told about how shaft length in the driver varies due to a person’s height. This could not be further from the truth!
The long game is probably harder to master than the short game. The perception that many club golfers have of how to master the long game is very wrong.
A player’s strength in their arms along with swinging the club at a fast speed is not what is required to hit the ball further. The points below are important parts of what is required to hit the ball further.
- Technique
- Timing
- Body Rotation
- Good Angle of Attack at impact
- Core strengthMany golfers ask: “Will clubs make them hit the ball further?”. I can tell you with confidence, that having the correct specifications in the make-up of your golf club will make you hit the ball further….without any doubt in my mind. This is one of the reasons I have Trackman. Trackman will help the player and I determine what is required to get the most out of your game.
Having length in your game will change the club selection that you require when hitting into a green. It can be debated that it would be easier to hit a 7 iron into a green than a 5 iron. On the other hand, if someone is good at their long game, they can still hit their 5 iron close. Unfortunately, the statistics will tell us that hitting shorter clubs into the green will make it easier for the player to get the ball closer to the flag.
Using the incorrect golf ball can become detrimental to a golfer’s game or game improving. What ball are you currently using? And why?
Everybody wants to use a Titleist Pro-V golf ball because all the professionals are using them. The question then remains, why are they using them and would the ball be suitable for you?
Each golf ball performs better by the ball speed and skill of the golfer. A Pro-V1 golf ball would not be suitable for a beginner and a Professional would not be able to confidently play the shots they wanted if they used a “Lady” ball.
Next time you are buying a ball, ask the staff to recommend the ball that would most be suitable for your game. You can actually lose or gain distance in your game if you use the wrong or right ball.
