As golfers, we all want to improve our game by purchasing clubs that apparently will give us “more distance”, make us hit the ball “straighter”, make us “hole putts”, but the problem there is, which clubs will help us individually get the most out of our game? That is the important question!
I use Mizuno bladed irons which have a small sweet spot, which have an amazing feel along with the ability to shot shape the ball the way I would like. These clubs are good for players with low handicaps through to professional players, but I would not advise them for mid-high handicapped players.
A set of Callaways are perfect for a mid-range to high-range player because they have a much larger sweet spot, plus a larger club face for more forgiveness. Unfortunately, the ability to shape the ball with these clubs is very hard. They are designed to get the ball in the air and go straight, which is what most players want.
On the other hand, you can get a set of clubs like the Ping I15 which are a slightly smaller head, like a blade, but have a bigger sweet spot along with being slightly offset, to help players with a slice. This club is good for a mid to high handicapper plus it is good for the lower handicapped player who likes to shape the ball and wants more forgiveness. The problem many players face is that they hit a good shot with a blade and feel they can use them. Anyone can hit a good shot with any club, the question to ask is:
1. Can I consistently hit good shots with these clubs to improve my golf?
2. Am I consistently getting the length I want out of these clubs?
3. Am I getting the trajectory I need for my game with these clubs?
Another important factor to remember when choosing clubs……the shaft! The shaft is the most important element in the design of a club! Too many people are using the wrong flex and weight in their clubs. People believe that the stiffer the shaft the further the ball will go. This is not true at all! The whippier the shaft, the further the ball will go! The problem here is that we all want distance, but if we get a really whippy club, the accuracy will be extremely poor. You need to find a shaft that has the right flex so you get the most in distance and accuracy for yourgame. Who cares if you are using Extra Stiff shafts or Regular Flex shafts, it is the score that you have that matters.
Do you have the right clubs in your bag to help you improve your game and be more consistent?
