The most obvious point that needs to be addressed is, how well do you need to hit the ball to achieve maximum distance? The answer is simple, you can have a fast club head speed but if the ball is not struck flush in the middle of the club, you will lose ball speed making your shot not achieve maximum distance. Sounds simple, yet, if you have a slightly slower club speed yet hit it out of the middle, you will outdrive the person with the faster speed and slightly off- middle strike.
I see many fit and strong golfers who you would think would be powerful enough to hit the ball a long way, but because of a poor technique, they do not achieve maximum distance.
Having Trackman has opened my eyes to how important certain factors are to creating an improved result for your game.
When working to find the right driver for a golfer to increase length and accuracy, I find that Angle of Attack, Spin Rate, Launch Angle, Club Speed, and Ball Speed are important to achieve this goal.
I find many golfers have one or two of these points correct for their level of golf, but it is rare to find a player who has the majority of the list.
Believe it or not, having the right club in your hands will help you achieve these results. You do not need to have the perfect swing, you just need to find the club to get the maximum out of what you have!
Hitting the ball in the middle of the club will obviously give you the best ball speed but you need to make sure that your club has the right shaft and loft. The shaft is the engine of the club. If the shaft flex and weight does not suit your swing, you will be wasting at least 10m-15m in length in your game.
Another point in maximizing distance in your game is using the correct ball for your club speed. Many people feel they swing the club “fast”, but who is the comparison made to? And how are you creating that speed?
As I have mentioned before, the timing of your body movement and centeredness of hit will give you the best ball speed. Throwing your arms hard at the ball will only create more spin and less distance!
