Golfers around the world have a much greater choice of what clubs, shafts and lofts they can use. Now we even have science on our side to fit us exactly with what we need to help our game. Trackman is the most sophisticated piece of technology that helps players of all levels around the world find the right combination to get the right clubs into our hands. As of Saturday 31st of March, I will be providing the service of Trackman III, the newest version of Trackman, which has only just been released into Australia.
It is great to see that companies have designed graphite shafts to be almost as consistent as steel shafts. A few years ago, if you bought graphite shafts, you would get the advantage of having a lighter shaft, but you would get inconsistent distances with your shots. Technology has improved this. You will be surprised at how many “top golfers” are using graphite shafts.
A common myth that many amateur golfers believe, is that if you are an elite amateur or golf professional, you use drivers with low lofts and extra stiff shafts. That could not be further from the truth. For example, many of the US Tour players are using 10 + degree lofted drivers with stiff or regular shafts to help them achieve better accuracy and distance, with less spin in the air. Getting the right loft is very important. Not having enough loft can cause you to hit the ball too low and gain too much side spin.
Players use the combination of certain lofts and flex in their clubs to match their capability and their swing and ball speed. As we get older, losing strength and flexibility is something that naturally occurs. It is important to find the right shafts in this instance.
Here are a few statistics to help you get a better perspective:
A standard men’s driver shaft is 1” longer than a standard ladies driver shaft (45” compared to 44”) Recommended Carry Distance vs. Driver Shaft Flex:
<180 Yards
181 – 200 Yards From200–235Yards From236–275Yards >275 Yards
= Ladies Flex = Senior Flex =RegularFlex =StiffFlex
= Extra Stiff Flex
If you use the wrong shaft it will cost you distance and accuracy, especially if you use a firmer shaft than what you require.
The height of a player is not very relevant when driver fitting. For example, some one of Tiger’s height and build actually uses a shorter driver than standard.
