Over a period of time I have covered all aspects of the game that I feel very important for a golfer to improve their skill and overall enjoyment of playing golf.
Playing golf to a successful level requires a player to have a positive mental game, clubs fitted to the golfer’s skills level, golf lessons with a golf professional of choice, a consistent golf swing with a clear understanding of what is required to hit the ball to the satisfaction of the golfer.
Course management is critical in reducing errors and taking advantage of the golfer’s skill level. Correct club selection when playing a shot, be it off the tee, from the fairway, or simply using the right club for a chip shot, can help you minimize your errors and take advantage of a positive situation.
Positive and quality practice is better than a large quantity of useless practice. Set targets on the practice area. Score how often you hit the ball within your set targets. Repeat this and see how well or poorly you are scoring. Visualize the shot you want to play. Do not just take a club and just hit without visualizing what you want to do with your shot.
Ask your professional coach for drills to help you in any area that you are lacking confidence. Drills are great in helping you improve your skill level and understanding of what is needed to achieve a positive result.
Below I have a few key points to assist you with various parts of your game.
Putting:
- When walking to the green, look at how the green slopes i.e. front to back, left to right. This will help you get a
good insight to how your putt will break.
- The length of your backswing determines the distance your putt will travel. A short, square impact position will
help start the ball online and give you a positive roll. Chipping:
- Soft hands at address
- Slightly open stance at address
- Hinge your hands early on the backswing
- Make sure you hit down into the ball rather than scoop.
Iron Play:
- Encourage a descending blow into the ball
- Use enough club to get the ball to the green
- Hinge your hands early on the backswing
Driver:
- Tee the ball above the height of your driver
- Sweep the ball off the tee with an ascending swing
- Follow through the ball freely rather than steer the ball.
- Create a smooth tempo on your backswing
